Hiking & Walking with Alpine Elephant!

Our hiking & walking holidays in the beautiful French Alps offer you high quality accommodation and hospitality with fantastic walking from our very doorstep. As keen walkers we can advise you on the local area and the best walks for you and your group. We will help you with 'logistical support' such as local transport, booking refuges and alternative activities - and may accompany you on selected walking days if you wish.

From our local knowledge and experience we have developed suggested itineraries that range from half hour strolls to 2 days of high level ridge walking and scrambling.

Re. catering, we can provide B&B, part-catered (e.g. breakfast and option of 3 or 4 evening meals a week) or fully catered accommodation (breakfast, afternoon tea and cakes, 6 evening meals a week). See our Catered Accommodation page for more details.

So a typical walking week will include:

Hearty breakfasts and 3 course evening meals (option of 3 - 6 nights per week)

Alpine walking is GR8!

The Grand Massif / Haute Giffre region is a stunning location for a summer holiday with awesome scenery: rivers, forests and high mountain ridges plus numerous spectacular waterfalls. There are 450 kms of well-marked trails within the local area and walking for all abilities, from easy valley strolls to challenging high level expeditions.

In summer daytime temperatures are typically 22-28 degrees C. The weather will often follow a distinct pattern, with several days of fine sunny weather, then a build up to a thunderstorm or two (usually very dramatic!), followed by a return to sunny weather. To see a graph (pdf format) with typical summer temperatures in the French Alps click here.... September and October are also fantastic months for walking, with (typically) lower temperatures e.g. 16-24 degrees C and stable, sunny weather, with less thunderstorms.

On more restful days you may want to take in the delights of Sixt & Samoens with their traditional architecture and authentic French atmosphere. The numerous cafes, bars & restaurants will give you a true taste of the Haute-Savoie and you can buy traditional foods and souvenirs from the local shops and markets. There are regular guided tours of the town and many open air activities in the evenings.

For more information on local events and activities please see the Samoens and Sixt Fer a Cheval Tourist Office websites.

Wildlife Spotting

This area offers abundant opportunities to see specialist mountain species with mammals such as Chamois, Ibex, Marmottes, Red and Black squirrels. Bird species include Golden eagles and the awesome Lammergeier (gypaetus barbatus). And not forgetting a wealth of alpine plant species and a great range of mushrooms!

We can provide specialist weeks where we guide you to the best wildlife spots - see our Special Interests page for details.
